About Clark County Washington

Clark County Washington is in the Southwest corner of Washington State, just across the river from Portland, Oregon. Popular reasons for many to live in this area are lower housing costs, better funding in the school systems and no State Income Tax deducted from your pay check. * Residents are still very close to Portland and will commute to jobs across the I-5 and I-205 bridges to work.

As the largest city in Clark County, Vancouver, Washington sits on the border of Washington only a mile from Jantzen Beach Center in Portland Oregon where there is no sales tax. Clearly the merchants are very aware of the desire of Washington residents to shop there who otherwise pay a sales tax in Washington. It is important to note and seems to be a little known fact that Washington residents are supposed to claim their purchases when entering the State of Washington so that they may pay the appropriate sales tax. As a resident here for over 20 years, I have yet to meet anyone that has actually done this, but of course this is not an endorsement. 

Because Clark County is so close to Portland, Oregon essentially all available over the air broadcasts are from Portland. This includes TV stations as well as most Radio stations. The only real down side to this is that Washington residents are generally left out of the loop as to what is going on as far as State of Washington government news. With that we have included links to Seattle TV station web sites, where State issues are covered more thoroughly.

*A consideration when considering moving here is that many residents do live in Clark County while commuting to the Portland area for their regular jobs. As such, the State of Oregon does deduct Oregon Taxes from your pay check, but at the end of the tax year there is a reduced rate that Washington residents will pay to the State of Oregon for income tax.
