Advertising doesn't work on the Internet?

As I have had the fortune to talk with many small business owners over the years, I have heard some interesting stories about why they go it alone or think that advertising on the Internet doesn't work. I have yet to find a simple way to explain to these same business owners that have their business on "Main Street" that building a web site and sticking it out here among billions of pages will in fact not work. Expecting someone that has never heard of them is going to be able to find them, just doesn't make sense. The same reason that a business opens their doors on a well traveled street is the exact same reason to be part of this network. On the Internet, which is even more crowded, without this help they put themselves in a virtually hidden world... In comparison, it would be the same as opening their store a 100 miles away where you'd have to hike in to get to the door.

Some think, perhaps because of trying this previously mentioned strategy, conclude that Internet advertising just doesn't work.
